Maintaining ethical conduct, respect, and integrity in athletics depends on sportsmanship in great part. Understanding how academic level and age affect sportsmanship behaviors among athletes is crucial given the rising involvement in sports events. This paper looks at: - Variations in sportsmanship across team and individual sportsmen; - The correlation between sportsmanship conduct, academic level, and age.
Approach:
Design of Study: Descriptive-field investigation.
There are 162 athletes total—78 team players, 84 individual competitors.
Age range: 15–27 years.
Sports include both team (like basketball, volleyball, football) and individual (like wrestling, taekwondo, swimming).
Multidimensional Sportsmanship Orientations Scale (MSOS) for measuring tool
- Statistical Analysis:
Test of Kruskal-Wallis; Mann-Whitney U; Spearman Correlation Coefficient
Important Learnings
1. Sportsmanship Comparison: Compared to team sports players, athletes in individual sports-show significantly -better sportsmanship standards.
2. Academic Level Influence: Athletes majoring in physical education- and non-physical education-show no significant variations in sportsmanship practices.
3. Age Influence: Compared to other age groups, athletes between **18-20 years** showed better sportsmanship.
Comparatively to team sports, the structure and culture of individual sports might encourage a greater feeling of personal responsibility and ethical behavior.
Academic Influence: Sportsmanship levels were not much affected by physical education background in academics.
Younger athletes (18–20 years) shown more sportsmanship, maybe because of their developmental stage and educational background.
Final Thoughts and Suggestions
Age greatly influences sportsmanship inclinations; younger athletes show greater ethical awareness. Individual sportsmen also often demonstrate )great sportsmanship conduct.
Suggestions for further studies include for increasing sample size in many sports.
Tracking changes in sportsmanship throughout time by use of longitudinal research.
Both in theoretical and practical sports training, coaches and teachers should stress moral education.
